There is much to celebrate still in Valley View.  The post today is intended to highlight different events/recognitions:

  • While we are hopeful that our current graduation date will be unaffected, we have secured the same venue for June 18th as a make-up date.  We are committed to having a graduation for the class of 2020.
  • Congrats to Mrs. Shirley (HS) and Mrs. Weaver (JH) for being awarded a full scholarship to the Battelle Computer Science Discoveries Professional Learning Program in conjunction with  This allows the two teachers to engage in professional development at no cost to our district so that they will be able to teach computer coding with our students in the near future.
  • Congrats to the Valley View Board of Education for receiving the “Effective School Board Award” from the Ohio School Board Association.  This marks the 10th straight year for Valley View achieving this award.
  • Thank you to the teachers who have organized our “Socially distant” parade today.  Please make sure you stay social distanced as teachers and staff drive by.  It is a beautiful day for this!
  • Congrats to our food service personnel and everyone who passed out 3,440 meals on Thursday for students at Valley View (Note: there were multiple days of meals passed out).
  • Congrats to our teaching staff, students, and parents.  In a short amount of time, we have completely changed our approach and delivery.  The example that I have used is that we are now trying to land a plane while it is in the air with no flight training.  While it will undoubtedly be bumpy, I am confident we will “get the plane on the ground”.  This would not be possible without the support and effort from everyone involved.

Finally, I would like to recognize one of our students.  Here is a copy of the letter recognizing Tyler Smith for the Anthony Munoz Straight “A” Scholarship:

Good afternoon Tyler,

Congratulations! With more than 190 schools in the Tri-State area and hundreds of applicants, you’ve been chosen as a recipient of the 2020 Anthony Muñoz Foundation Straight “A” Scholarship. You were nominated by Heather Keating for your Academic excellence, Athletic achievements, strong Ambition, a winning Attitude, the ability to overcome Adversity and for having an Active role in the community.

As one of eighteen recipients, you will receive a one-time $2,000 college scholarship. One male and one female Straight ‘A’ Student will be chosen to receive an additional $3,000 scholarship (for a total of $5,000) to further their education.

Typically, recipients are celebrated at a luncheon in April. Due to COVID-19, students will now be recognized and rewarded at our Hall of Fame Dinner. Event details are currently being finalized. Dates and expectations as a recipient will be provided in the following weeks.

While the news is filled with warnings, it is important to take a few moments to also celebrate our joys and successes as well.

Proud to be your Superintendent,
Ben Richards
